major additions reinvent Midd West High School

Midd West School District
Middleburg Borough, Snyder County, PA

Midd West High School is essentially a new, bigger, LEED Gold school built on the same site as the existing building. K&W site designers worked closely with the architect and District to plan for the demolition of 88,117 SF of the existing structure to make way for 169,609 SF of new construction, completely transforming the school and site. Careful phasing of construction kept the school operating throughout the project. The site layout was reworked to separate bus, vehicle and pedestrian traffic, and better connect the high school to the District’s two other schools on the same campus.

To keep the project on schedule, site designers needed to obtain approvals within an abbreviated land development timeline through open and continuous communication with local authorities. K&W also worked closely with the overall design team to create a sustainable site that achieved the District’s goal of LEED Gold certification. Of particular concern for the municipality and neighbors was stormwater discharge from the site. K&W was able to successfully address stormwater management design despite virtually no surface area available for stormwater storage.
