Site refinement enhances pedestrian safety and provides safe play area
The French Creek Elementary project includes demolition of the existing bus parking area (north side of school) and construction of a new car parking area and designated student drop-off zone. A one-way parent drop-off/pick-up loop around 97 new parking spaces will enhance safety for the existing school. With this new parking reconfiguration, there will be a total of 221 parking spaces – an addition of 92 spaces total for the school.
The site is bisected by the Municipal Boundary line for South Coventry Township and East Nantmeal Township. We were required to go through Land Development review processes with both municipalities.
The existing parking area on the opposite (south) side of the school will be reconfigured/reconstructed to serve a both parking area and bus drop-off zone. The aisles and access drives will also be widened and supported with new retaining walls. New sidewalks will also be added and ADA spaces will be relocated closer to the building.
There are three existing subsurface septic drain fields in very close proximity to the new parking/drop off areas. K&W was able to successfully design the new project without disturbing them, providing a significant cost savings to the district.
A new, all-abilities playground with new play equipment will be installed and include a rubberized surface. A 7,800 SF hard play area for games such as Four Square and a GaGa Ball will be on the site as well. New lighting and landscape plantings are being provided throughout the site. New stormwater management facilities are all underground.
