seamless services for multiple campuses
K&W assisted the Donegal School District in planning and executing multiple campus improvement projects, including the design of their new high school campus and athletic stadium. Creating a new 130 acre campus for a 204,000 SF high school in an area prone to sinkholes posed significant challenges. Existing soils and limestone geology meant stormwater infiltration was not feasible. K&W worked with the Lancaster County Conservation District and geotechnical engineers to develop water quality treatment systems throughout the new school site to meet NPDES requirements and protect against future sinkholes.
The project came in 22% under budget. K&W maintained strict control over costs throughout the design process via value engineering, cost comparisons, balanced earthwork, minimization of rock removal using computer terrain modeling, and clear communication with the design team and owner.
Designers created a paved trail system to provide public access to the new high school and connect the campus to the existing elementary school. They also planned the location for a future athletic stadium, designed by K&W several years after the high school was completed. Thinking ahead, site planners had already put the stormwater management system for the stadium in place during construction of the school.
Additional site features at the new high school campus include: 413 parking spaces; separate parent and bus drop off loops; an English garden courtyard; roadway improvements; public water and sewer connections; and water quality features including a stormwater management basin with a rain garden and rock filter forebay.
